Christchurch’s cycleway network as the council’s asset register holds it, 4,923 segments, 734 km of cycle lanes, separated cycleways, shared paths, quiet streets and trails. 48 km of it is genuinely separated from the traffic; the rest is paint, company, or calm. 17 of the strands carry names, the Major Cycle Routes, the spine network the post-quake city promised itself.
