# Every street, drawn, chch.live

No labels, no tiles: every road centreline the mappers have drawn for
Christchurch, arterial to driveway, inked as hairlines on one canvas. Drag to
wander, scroll to zoom, take the poster.

## Where the lines come from

OpenStreetMap, the city's roads as volunteers have mapped them: 38,828 ways,
291,377 coordinate pairs before thinning, 128,871 points after, thinned to 1 to
5 m and packed as integer steps into one 761,659-byte file that arrives before
the first line is drawn. The drawing is © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the
Open Database Licence. [The copyright](https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright)

## What it is for

The roads are how the record is filed. [The streets
roll](https://www.chch.live/street) counts what the archive holds for each
one, and [Your street](https://www.chch.live/lookup) is the door in by
address. Drawn together they answer a question no lookup does: how much of
this city is road.
