The papatipu marae of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, on the Whakaraupō shore the hapū has held for centuries — the bay takes its full name, Te Rāpaki-o-Te Rakiwhakaputa, from the rangatira who claimed it. The carved whare tūpuna Wheke opened in November 2010, replacing a hall that had served since 1901; it stood through the earthquakes months later.
