## The words it carries

> Benjamin Disraeli (1804 - 1881) was both a statesman and novelist. In 1868 and from 1874-80 he enjoyed two periods as one of the most popular British Prime Ministers. In 1876 he was made Earl of Beaconsfield. He secured working class support through his efforts to establish his trade union legislation. For Disraeli, literature was second to politics. However, the novels of his "'Young England Trilogy': Coningsby (1844); Sybil (1845) and Tancred (1847), written to promote his doctrine of Troy Democracy, have great characterisation and show his keen insight into the structure of Society. The Artwork 'Sybil' was created by Christchurch artist Ian Lamont (2007). The Cherubs, reproduced here from the Addington Cemetery, forms part of the Literary Streets Heritage Trail on which you are invited to collect crayon (or similar) rubbings of the images on paper.

The surveyor’s transcription, casing, spelling and typos as read off the plaque. The register does not say who the name belonged to; the dedication is the whole of the record.
