> You will be aware of the flooding in the Little Akaloa Valley on 15th December. This has many valley residents land and properties including mine. This is the second flood this year and about the 5th in the last 15 years, I have had land and property damage on every occasion but this time it was far more extensive. Each time the creek floods onto and over the road at the road bridge situated at approximately -43.682022, 172.976991. This bridge has a very low span which gets blocked forcing water over the bridge onto the road. The water then travels down the road until it reaches a small rise outside my property resulting in a backup of water which then passes down through my property which is situated on the left side of the road (driving to the sea). Mud and debris enter my sheds and garage, on this last occasion also into the house. Considerable damage has also occurred to paddocks, fences and gates on the left side of the road in addition to items in the sheds, garage and house. Vehicle crossing points for the creek have been completely destroyed. This year large trees and debris have come down the creek and lodged in my property close to the bridge (downstream side) resulting in the creek diverting through a paddock causing significant erosion damage. The picture shows destroyed fence and washed out paddock next to the road. The bridge is to the left and just beyond the telegraph pole. Ecan should investigate the suitability of this bridge as I believe it contributes to the flooding of my property and buildings and provide advice as how future floods and resultant damage can be mitigated.
