## Questions, answered briefly

**How many named rocks does Christchurch have?**

31 named cliffs and crags, 8 rocks, 1 reef and 5 quarries on the open map: plus 1,003 more drawn without a name, the Port Hills' volcanic tors and the pits that built the city.

**What are the crag names?**

The climbing community’s own, Castle Rock, The Tors, the workout walls of the Port Hills, recorded on the map alongside the older Māori and English names. Each page lists every name the map knows.

**Why are the quarries on this roll?**

The quarries are where the stone left the hills, Halswell’s basalt built the city’s kerbs and walls. They are mapped as landuse=quarry; the register’s listings for them live at [/history](https://www.chch.live/history).

**Where does the stone map come from?**

OpenStreetMap, every named cliff, rock, reef and quarry inside the city boundary (ODbL). A pin is the mapper’s position, not a surveyed mark.

Named cliffs, rocks, reefs and quarries on OpenStreetMap, inside the city boundary (ODbL). A pin is the mapper’s position for the feature, not a surveyed mark; the crag names and the dual names are the map’s own.
