How the council’s directory described it
The Sign of the Kiwi Cafe has a wonderful selection of refreshments to satisfy your needs in the scenic area of the Port Hills. Sign of the Kiwi is a unique New Zealand heritage site flanked by beautiful open parkland bordered by and set against extensive native bush. This tranquil reserve is located just ten kilometres from Christchurch city centre. The Sign of the Kiwi, originally called Toll House, is a small building at Dyers Pass on the road between Christchurch and Governors Bay. It was built in 1916–17 by Harry Ell as a staging post and opened as a tearoom and rest house. It has a Category I heritage classification by HeritageNZ and is a popular destination for the local and tourists. It is an important example of Vernacular architecture an architectural style that is designed based on local needs, availability of construction materials and reflecting local traditions. It is significant in the history of the Summit Road, and part of the earliest attempt of nature conservation in NZ. The site provides wonderful views of the Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps and the Banks Peninsula. Open 8.30am-4.30pm
