Where crime gets reported.
The NZ Police reported-crime record for Christchurch City: mapped to the small statistical areas the record is published in.

The map
The map needs JavaScript, the counts below still stand.
Each cell is a statistical meshblock, a small area of a few streets, not an address, and not an incident. Click a cell for what the record holds for it; pick “suburbs” for the same record rolled into named suburbs. Per-capita needs residents, so it works at suburb size only.

What this record is, and is not
- Reported is not all. This is crime reported to and recorded by NZ Police. A lot of crime is never reported, how much depends on the offence. Burglaries get reported for insurance; assaults often don’t.
- A cell is not an address. The finest geography Police publish is the statistical meshblock, usually a few streets. Nothing here says where inside a cell anything happened.
- Cells are not suburbs. Suburb figures roll up the meshblocks whose centre falls inside the suburb’s outline, a cell straddling the line counts toward one side only.
- Small numbers swing. A handful of offences either way moves a quiet cell several shades. Per-capita needs people, so it only works at suburb size, and a shoplifting hotspot is a busy place, not necessarily a dangerous one.
- Some rows don’t know when. About a quarter of the record carries no reliable day, a third no reliable hour, the “when” views use the rows that know, and say so.
