The remembered names

Every park bench that carries a name, every rock with a dedication, every wall that says lest we forget, the council keeps a register of the plaques standing in the public estate, and each record carries the inscription as the surveyor transcribed it. 1,082 of them stand on the roll, 874 carrying a dedication, the rest filed under the register’s own "unknown", on 306 named grounds across the city.

Every inscribed plaque drawn, the dense cluster is the Botanic Gardens and Hagley, the scatter reaches every reserve and headland the estate touches. The teal pins are the ones the register marks as artwork.

The grounds that carry them

The works beside them

The register’s public-art layer keeps 337 works in the same public estate, 113 named enough to roll.

The suburbs that remember

An exact join, every plaque whose pin falls inside the outline counts, and the grounds named are the suburb’s own.

The whole roll

Every plaque on the register, under the ground that carries it, 307 grounds, 1,082 names. A plaque keeps its own page; the ground it names keeps the list.

Questions, answered briefly

What is this page?

The remembered names, the council’s plaque register for the public estate: 1,082 plaques on seats, stones, rocks and walls across 306 named grounds, most carrying a dedication as the surveyor transcribed it, the rest filed under the register’s own "unknown". The asset register doubles as the city’s book of who it chose to remember.

What does a plaque record?

The dedication, mostly, a name, a date, the reason the ground carries the words. The register also says what the plaque rides on (the park bench is the classic), the ground it stands on, and the commission year when one was filed.

Can I see the plaque itself?

845 of them carry a photograph, the register’s own frames, opening on the council’s image host. The rest are the inscription alone; a plaque out of photograph range is still on the roll.

Is the plaque still standing?

The register says so, all but a handful are marked in service. But it is the books' word: a plaque the register holds may have weathered past reading, and a fresh one may not yet be surveyed.

Who are these people?

Councillors and volunteers, soldiers and gardeners, children and dogs, the dedications the grounds approved. The inscriptions are transcribed as written; the names are the city’s memory, not a claim the archive verifies.

The record behind this

Christchurch City Council’s open data, the Furniture service’s Plaque layer, with the public-art register beside it. The inscriptions are the surveyor’s transcription, typos and all; "In Service" is the books, not a promise the plaque still reads clean today. The standing monuments the crowd mapped are at /monuments; the named and listed city is at /heritage.
