The ladder how a warning climbs

MetService escalates in three steps, and the words are not interchangeable, each rung is a different ask of you.

Watch Bad weather is possible. Check back, the forecast is not sure enough yet to warn, but it is sure enough to watch.
Orange warning Bad weather is expected. Prepare, the kind of weather that disrupts plans and makes some roads worth avoiding.
Red warning The most severe step, reserved for weather that will cause damage and is dangerous to be out in. Act on it now, not when it arrives.

What this actually is

The only source on this site that is ahead of events rather than behind them. Everything else here reports something that already happened; a warning is the one thing published before the thing it is about, which is why it sorts on onset rather than on when it was issued, the useful order is what lands first, not what was typed first. A warning currently in force is stamped “in force” rather than given a relative time, because how long ago it started is not the part you need.
