Raw milk near Christchurch

Milk that skips the pasteuriser and the shop, the law lets it go straight from the farmer to you, and only that way. Three registered producers pour it within reach of the city, one in Tai Tapu, two up the northern highway, each verified against MPI’s raw-milk register and its own word.

The rule of it

Raw milk is the only milk a farmer may sell you unpasteurised, and only under a regulated control scheme: the producer registers with the Ministry for Primary Industries, follows strict hygiene and testing requirements, and sells it directly to the consumer. It can never be on-sold, which is why you will not find it in a dairy, a café or a supermarket, the farm gate, or a registered depot, is the whole supply chain MPI, selling raw drinking milk.

MPI's own advice is blunt: raw milk is a risky food for anyone, it can carry E. coli, Campylobacter and Salmonella, and a more serious one for young children, pregnant women, older people and anyone with low immunity, who MPI says should not drink it at all. For those who choose to, its advice is to heat it to just boiling, 70°C for a minute, and keep it at 4°C or colder MPI, is it safe to drink raw milk?.

The three the register verifies

Tai Tapu Milk Company, Tai Tapu

Fernside Fresh, Fernside

The Good Cow, Sefton

How this list stays honest

The authority here is MPI's raw-milk register: all three hold current, unsuspended registrations (expiry 2028), out of twenty registered farm-dairy operators nationwide. The hours, addresses and price are the farms' own words, checked against their sites on 29 September 2026, with Tai Tapu's Facebook page and Companies Office record standing in for a website it does not have. Where a directory and a farm disagree, the farm's word wins; where neither can be checked, the register still says the farm is real.

Tai Tapu is the in-district one, the other two sit just over the Waimakariri line, which is why the page says near. If one of these stops pouring, or another farm registers, the record wants to know.
