Parks

The reporter’s words
My wife and I are keen windsurfers and have recently returned to sailing in the estuary and today went to the park off Humphries Drive where we always used to sail. This has in the last little while been turned into a freedom camping area. We were greeted by a tangle of cars, tents, young tourists etc in various states of dress or undress coking, eating etc as campers do. We found a park and started to rig and witnessed a trio of young males showering in full view naked using the rinsing gear originally provided for kiters and windsurfers. We felt intimidated and very unwelcome in what technically is a public recreating area. It was very unsavoury. A council truck was there and spent the best part of an hour sorting and taking away the rubbish from the area. The foreshore was littered in left over food scraps. Whose idea this was to permit this activity in what was a well used sporting area needs to be put under question. These young freedom campers should be in designated camping grounds and paying for the device not ruining a city asset. What gain is there having these people here. They are a cost. I for one will never go back to this area a place we have enjoyed immensely in the past. Mike Unger
