The reporter’s words

As president of the Arawa Canoe Club, I have received a Health and Safety hazard notification relating to the presence of large rafts of cut weed floating in the Otakaro Avon River between Kerr's Reach and the estuary. The size and location of the weed rafts varies due to tide and wind conditions, but they represent a navigation hazard for small craft such as kayaks and rowing skiffs as they increase the risk of capsize. While our club members appreciate the efforts to reduce the levels of weed in the river generally, a review of the cutting and retrieval procedures to minimize the volume of floating debris would be greatly appreciated.
