Roading/Streets

Reported Tuesday, 1 June 2021 at 7:57 pm, Antigua St & Disraeli St, Addington, Christchurch 8024, New Zealand.

The reporter’s words

My main mode of transit is a bicycle. I frequently ride up and down the Antigua St cycle lane. The stoplight at Antigua/Disraeli has a separate little bicycle stoplight (i.e. red/amber/green in the shape of a bicycle), which is great when there is busy traffic during the day, however at night it is infuriating. The situation is, both Antigua and Disraeli will be entirely empty of cars, the car stoplight is green, and the bicycle stoplight is red; when I approach the stoplight, road sensors know that a bike is approaching; however the bicycle stoplight does not turn green... first the car stoplight turns red, then Disraeli St cars get the shortest green light ever (even though there are no cars), then Antigua St cars *and* bikes get a green light. I reliably observe this behaviour in the absence of all cars whatsoever. From my perspective, the bike stoplight should just turn green.
