Roading/Streets

Reported Saturday, 9 April 2022 at 7:21 pm, 159 Ashgrove Terrace, Somerfield, Christchurch 8024, New Zealand.

The reporter’s words

Please could signage and speed control measures be increased at Ashgrove Tce entrance/exit to Cashmere High. Or even a gate to slow cyclists. This from the principal today- of course students should be more careful, but they are young and will make mistakes from time to time. Telling the students to do the right thing is probably the least effective way to prevent accidents here, better road design would be more effective. “ Another area of concern that I would like to highlight for both students and parents is the behaviour of some of our cyclists as they leave the school onto Ashgrove Terrace, and cycle home. Many students cycle out onto the road at speed without even looking for oncoming traffic. There are many cars parked on the side of the road which limit both the cyclist’s visibility and the ability of traffic on this road to see the cyclist. Please could I ask that if your child is cycling to and from school using the Ashgrove gate, that you have a conversation with them about appropriate cycle safety measures. They need to be cycling in a way that minimises the chance of them being hit by a vehicle as they enter or ride down Ashgrove Terrace.”
