The reporter’s words

There is now very significant flooding in the Wairarapa stream. We are likely to loose many of the trees you can see in the picture, they are drowning. It has never been so bad. This morning I talked to the council people who came to take away the weed from upstream where it was cleared last week. The wrong end of the stream has been cleared, it has not helped anyone, the high water has nowhere to go, if anything it has made the flooding downstream worse. The council people also haven’t seen it ever so bad, and wonder if there is a more significant obstruction downstream. That is what needs to be cleared. They emphasised that we must get back in contact with you and see what you are doing about it. Has any of you actually come on site to see the problem? If you had you would not have instructed the teams to start their clearing up upstream of the flooding. My neighbours and I have been trying to contact you several times, through this means and by telephone and by email and through our councillors. Apart from a note a couple of weeks ago saying it would be attended to in May, needing a special permit, you are not responding to say what you are doing about it. We need to hear what is happening ASAP.
