The reporter’s words

Hi I am writing to please ask common sense prevail and the new car park space that has replaced the longstanding yellow lines outside 18 Rapaki Road be removed and the yellow lines reinstated. This new parking space is on the outside of a 180 degree corner for all traffic heading to and from Erewhon and Montgomery Terrace. It leaves a lane width on Rapaki Road of 2.8 metres- barely enough for straight through traffic let alone cars turning a sharp corner. This means any longer vehicles will need to do a 3 point turn to negotiate the corner, and will mean 2 way traffic is unable to negotiate the corner as the uphill car has to sweep onto the outside of Erewhon Terrace into oncoming downhill traffic. The solution would be to reinstate the yellow lines and move the parking space downhill 20 metres or so. This way vehicles can get around the corner before negotiating the narrowing. The current change is a marked impediment to traffic flow compared to the longstanding previous arrangement. I was involved in the consultation process on the parking changes for Rapaki Road but this park was added late in the process after the plan I replied to. Originally it was marked as staying yellow lines. I was unaware this change had been made in response to people wanting more on street parking. I would have thought the thoroughfare of traffic took a higher priority on the road than the provision of a single new car park. I would appreciate a reply. Thanks in advance Jeremy Hickling 0211813239
