The Waimakariri river is filling up with silt and sediment downstream from the motorway bridge. This island you can see in the picture is dramatically reducing the amount of water that the current riverbed can carry during flood events. This area near Stewart's Gully needs to be dredged as has been done in the past. Areas at risk are Kaiapoi township and Kainga
