The reporter’s words

We all know that a roundabout is an effective solution for traffic with even flow from all directions. We also all know that they fail when there is heavy flow from one direction. This is the case at the Johns Rd/Sawyers Arms Rd roundabout. During busy periods, it is the major bottleneck for Johns Rd. All the money spent on upgrading Johns Rd seems undone every morning and evening by queues and backlogs at the Sawyers Arms roundabout. I’d like to make a suggestion. Your roading designers have created an excellent feature with the new on-ramp S, like at Wilkinson’s Rd. Can we do the same thing from Sawyers Arms Rd turning left onto Johns Rd. This would allow those turning left to move freely, while leaving a much shorter queue at the roundabout for those turning right. As always, having multiple lanes leading into an intersection ensures that people heading one way are not being held back by those waiting to go somewhere else. There is certainly available land on the left of Sawyers Arms heading from the city onto Johns Rd to create a separate merge lane towards the airport. Does this make sense? Brian Spensley
