Roading/Streets
Reported Wednesday, 13 February 2019 at 6:12 pm, 182–186, Fendalton Road, Fendalton, 8052, Canterbury.
The reporter’s words
I’m not sure what is happening on Ilam road and memorial Avenue intersections but there is a bottle neck of traffic backing up traffic right back to Clyde Road intersection where even when the lights are green on Clyde road cars cannot enter. Approaching Ilam Road it became clear that the lights phase were the problem with Ilam road having a longer phase and Memorial Avenue having a shorter one. The level of traffic on Ilam Road was normal to light and Memorial Avenue was heavy. Only 5 cars were getting through. Each phase was around 30 seconds including the red light phase where all lights are red. As a result many cars were taking risks, doing U turns and people coming out of side streets in the hope of being let in. There will be problems if not already happening with crashing cars and someone getting hurt. This backup is also on the airport side of the intersection as well, backing up traffic as far back as Burnside High.
