The reporter’s words

The southbound Colombo St cycle lane tapers off to a point. It presents a hazard for cyclists and other road users because there is no clear delineation in a busy area. The nexus of Colombo with Welles St and the bay into south city mall also create lots of turning traffic across the centreline so it’s already a hazard-prone spot. For cyclists it’s a difficult transition from the comfort and safety of the dedicated lanes (starting as far north as Lichfield) into the shared lane. I’m not able to offer a perfect solution here... but I think the parallel parking bays and island kerbs could possibly be reshaped for better utility and to allow for a clearer cycle lane, but the key point is the whole streetscape from the St Asaph intersection to the overbridge on Moorhouse could use a healthy dose of urban design remodelling. Any improvements to cyclist confidence here will be hugely appreciated. Thank you.
