Parks
Reported Friday, 10 April 2020 at 11:21 am, 298 Gloucester Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011, New Zealand.
The reporter’s words
I watched the resident of unit 4, 298 Gloucester St throw all of the belongings pictured over the fence from his residence and into the Gloucester/Worcester St Park. When he realised I had seen him (from inside of the public park where I stood), he started talking to me through the fence, and I was then subject to a variety of verbal abuse and xenophobic comments due to my accent (I'm American). The resident of unit 4/298 Gloucester asserted that he has the right to throw his belongings over the fence and into the public park because it is public property in his country. As a permanent resident here, I see NZ as my country as well. When I stated that it was my country too, he said "it doesn't sound like it" (meaning that my accent was a giveaway that I wasn't kiwi). I said that he shouldn't treat a public park that way. I find this whole ordeal really disturbing, in addition to the actual incident I am reporting. My husband and wee boy (who were there with me) were both shot in the mosque attacks last year. It is unfortunate that we have people so disrespectful of public property and intolerant of others in Christchurch.
