The reporter’s words

The spotlights being taken down off New Regent Street this morning, as a business owner this is another blow for the street after Covid tourism hits and the establishment and focus on the Oxford Terrace precinct, plus the continued eyesore of derelict units that no one seems to be able to do anything about. The spotlights were critical to the ambience, feel and and draw of this street and I just cannot believe this has happened. Could the council not ration their use to the weekends if the ongoing cost of power is too much? They need to be a permanent feature. The businesses are STRUGGLING and the street was growing its presence as a beautiful unique night time sojourn that also enhanced the theatre experiences. Furthermore, there is a street lantern without a bulb closest to Issac Theatre Royal that a snap send resolve was completed on at least two months ago that still has not been fixed. We in the hospo industry here jump through hoops for the council to keep livelihoods and this place alive, we promote the street as an attraction, for Chch! What does it take to get some tangible support back where it counts? Please reinstate the lights, the street so dearly needs them!!! Regards Beth, Waffle Haus New Regent St
