The reporter’s words

Hello. I am writing in regards to water flowing across the road opposite our house at 277 Okuti Valley Road, Little River causing erosion to the side of the road and our driveway entrance. We have had substantial damage inflicted to the roadside where we live – particularly in the last 12months (severely exacerbated by the heavy rainfall in June 2021). Some remedial work has been done by contractors to fix the issues but this has unfortunately not solved the problems (potentially creating more issues). Following the large rainfall event earlier this year, contractors have attempted to remediate the damage to the side of the road and the entrance to our driveway by clearing the cutoff drain, laying down asphalt in two places and putting down stones/shingle at the entry to our driveway which had become almost unpassable. Unfortunately, this has not solved the problem. We see water tracking across the road during any rainfall event and this immediately starts to erode the road side from the culvert down to below our drive entrance. The asphalt has made no difference – the water either goes over it (as there is no lip) and erodes the grass behind it, or funnels into the sections which haven’t had asphalt and erode them out even worse than before. All the good work to level the entrance to our driveway is rapidly doing undone with each rainfall event. What is needed is for the asphalt to be put down from the cut-out ditch (photo 2) down to below our driveway (photo 1). This asphalt also needs a lip on it to stop the water simply flowing over it and eroding the grass behind it – as this only pushes the problem further into the grass verge.
