The reporter’s words
Dear sir/madam I am writing to request some changes to or enforcement of the parking rules for the car parking area between the Akaroa boat ramp (Rue Brittan) and Recreation grounds. Currently the large marked parks in the centre that have always been dedicated boat trailer parks are now being excessively taken up with camper vans and passenger cars. They park in such a way that there is no room for cars with boat trailers to park after launching their boats. Some camper vans are also staying overnight even though there are signs advising no camping. So even if you get to the boat ramp early the parks are already taken. On cruise ship days the problem is worse with multiple large tour buses parking there waiting for the passengers from the cruise to arrive. They also park there overnight when there are cruise ships on consecutive days. We have had a property in Akaroa for 11 years and have always paid the annual fee to use the boat ramp and assume this includes somewhere to park. We have noticed there are areas in Akaroa where there signs saying no boat trailer parking (Rue Jolie for example) which we abide by even though large buses and campers park there and take up more width than most boat trailers. However there are no areas that say no bus/camper van parking. There are only signs saying no camping which doesn't stop them parking there all day and in some cases overnight. I would like to see some painted signage on the large central car parks saying boat trailers only as well as some signs erected saying the same thing and also saying strictly no buses/camper vans . There doesn't appear to be any enforcement of the no camping signs or the many cars and campers that park all day on the yellow lines around the beach perimeter of this car park which also hinders towing vehicles access to the boat ramp. We have spoken to many other locals and boat ramp users who are equally frustrated by the lack of support for local residents who pay rates and boat ramp fees. It's not a large cost to erect some signage and have someone ticketing parking violations over the busy Xmas New Year period. I look forward to your reply. Many thanks Helena
