The reporter’s words

The tree before the Merrin School gateway was struck by one of 2 buses returning 90 children from manual classes at Kirkwood Intermediate around 3pm today. This tree is dangerous as it is too close to the curb and one of the main branches sticks out into the roadway. The gutter is also damaged by the tree roots. The problem is exacerbated by a multitude of parents parking to pick up their children which often forces the two buses to double park causing further hazards for children and motorists. May I suggest that either the tree (with overhead wires going through it) be removed or that the current 3 minute parking zone be extended up to the driveway of 45 Merrin St for the same am and pm times as those closer to the school gate. In this case we will suggest to the school that they reserved the space between the school gate and the 45 Merrin St drive as the bus parks on the days required.
