The reporter’s words

Urgent Health and Safety Concern. From Senior Constable Matthew Reeves, Neighbourhood policing team. Good afternoon, I watched an elderly gentleman in his mobility scooter try to return to the retirement village on Cavandish Road. There is no footpath connecting the footpath outside the retirement home to the paths on either side or along Styx Mill Road. It was raining and he rode onto the grass. The mobility scooter then tipped over tipping him into a ditch and landing on top of him with his head held in the water starting to gather at the bottom. He was unable to move. If I had not seen it happening he could have died. I believe there must be a by law or something that tells developers they must put a footpath outside their developments. This urgently needs to change to state that they must, within reason connect it to existing footpaths. With the increasing rise of retirement villages and an ageing population it is essential that the external connections of these homes and villages facilitate safe mobility for the elderly and mobility impaired. I have also seen multiple other cases of elderly people walking along the busy Cavandish road because of the 50 metre gap that the developer has left between footpaths. This is a fatality waiting to happen. The same is occurring along Styx mill Road. Kind Regards Matthew Reeves
