The reporter’s words

Intersection of Mary St/Main North Rs. As a regular user of this intersection and a former Police and Traffic Officer of 40 odd years I submit the green phase regularly observed for Mary St is far too short at between 4 & 5 seconds, at best allowing 3/4 cars to turn right or proceed straight ahead. Given the poor anticipation of a lot of Christchurch drivers the norm is 2/3 cars getting to turn of go straight ahead. Last Friday with a queue of about 20 cars you can imagine the time it took to clear that. There are two issues: Firstly the green phase needs to be increased, Secondly the introduction of an amber phase PRIOR to the green ( as in the U.K.) would alert drivers to the imminent change. The reality is that with proper observation and anticipation a queue of cars should all start to move at the same time on a green signal, not after putting down the cellphone or whatever distracts them, selecting a gear and thinking about what they want to do.
