The reporter’s words

I visited the Avonhead Cemetery on the anniversary of my mother's birthday yesterday 4 May. I visit her grave on a regular basis. I am frankly appalled at the neglected state of the Avonhead Cemetery - in particular the area surrounding the Memorial to those who lost their lives in the Christchurch Earthquake. The grass around the graves reassembles an overgrown paddock. One could makes excuses about the inclement weather & the surge in grass growth but this is not the first incident of neglect in this particular area of the Cemetery I have witnessed over the two & a half years I have been a visitor. It is important to note due to the significant rainfall in recent weeks a number of the graves have slumped & thus making it a hazard for the unsuspecting visitor to their loved ones graves as the sinking of the graves CANNOT be seen by the overgrown grass. Overseas I have seen cemeteries tendered over with much pride - in fact you would hardly recognise them as cemeteries but more akin to well maintained gardens & parks. The grass & garden area surrounding our Avonhead earthquake memorial is a disgrace!
