The reporter’s words
I am asking for a large area of grassed Council land at the distal end of Cricklewood Place Avonhead - adjacent & infront of properties 25/27/29 Cricklewood Place - to be considered on a regular & long term lawn mowing schedule of the Christchurch City Council. The Council regularly maintains the Cricklewood Reserve & lawn adjacent to the Reserve situated in Cricklewood Place opposite Number 33.. The lawn mower is off loaded in Cricklewood Place especially to do the lawn adjacent to the Cricklewood Reserve but the larger grassed areas at end of the Cricklewood cul de sac in the past have been ignored as they have been assumed to be the responsibility of the home owner. This is a large area of grass that is NOT on privately owned land & It is Council land that happens to be adjacent to 25/27/29 Cricklewood Place. This area of land in times past was maintained by the homeowners of the properties as a 'good will' gesture. Unfortunately homeowners have changed & new owners appear little interested in mowing lawn that is not theirs. I am sure of my facts as for 9 years I was the owner of 29 Cricklewood Place & mowed the entire area in that time. I am presently the owner of 33 Cricklewood Place - my parents had lived at this address & 2 years ago we purchased the property. We have our property tenanted but I am a regular visitor as the gardener in order to maintain the gardens at 33 Cricklewood Place to a high standard. It is demoralising to see a beautiful street start to look shabby through sheer neglect. The lack of regular lawn mowing over a large area at the end of the cul de sac is a contributing factor. I have personally maintained the small triangle of carpet roses in this area in an effort to beautify the street. I do believe it is the responsibility of the Council to provide lawn mowing services in this instance, absolutely - this area has failed to be identified in the past as an area to be mowed. Unfortunately times have changed & homeowners are less generous with their time & as rate payers expect parks/reserves & large areas of lawn to be the Council's concern. As you already mow a small area of Cricklewood Place adjacent to the Reserve & the is mower already 'on site' I hope you will look favourably at extending this to the larger grassed areas as photographed. I am available should you wish to discuss the above further. Many thanks Sheryn Linton
