The reporter’s words

This drain does not remove water, never has. Water backs up from it and sits stagnant until rain moves it. Heavy rain, unable to escape, causes a virtual pond. This is not something new. The green slime that grows in the drain in warmer weather is at best unsanitary and cannot be healthy. Children in particular, often along the street to use McFarlane Park, must be at risk as are animals. Clearing the drain, while a temporary improvement, does nothing to solve the problem as water just backs up again. It would be better and more sanitary to do away with this drain altogether - unless it gets connected to an outlet that does actually take the water.
