Trees - General
Reported Friday, 2 February 2024 at 10:57 am, 23 Aylsham Lane, Casebrook, Christchurch 8051, New Zealand.
The reporter’s words
Regents Park Drive is the main Street in my suburb, featuring roadside planting of flowering cherry trees (grafted). Before the pandemic these were pruned at their base every year…why? Because the trees are grafted onto a root stook which can send out out its own collar of foliage every season. Not only a cosmetic problem, but the (stronger) root stock takes over, deforms the tree’s growth causing the top to finally die. Not all the trees are affected but many are. Base pruning urgently needed.
