The reporter’s words

Hi - can the council please look at renewing and improving the cycleway symbols and signage on the shared pathway along Rolleston Avenue beside the Botanic Gardens and outside the Museum. This pathway is used heavily by tourists visiting both of these destinations and who are not aware this is a shared pathway. I often see near-misses with cyclists, as tourists wander across the path taking photos etc. I cycle this route twice a day - I am a slow cyclist (54 year old on a 20 year old bike!) and use my bell frequently to try and alert tourists but even so, I have had near misses myself as people step backwards in front of my bike or when they hear a bell, automatically move to the right, as they would do in a country where traffic drives on the right. Tourist buses drop off their passengers right beside the shared pathway ( see the white bus in the photo) so maybe the council could do a bit of outreach with the bus drivers, encouraging them to warn their guests to watch for bikes? Finally, as the majority of visitors are Chinese, maybe it would even be worth adding the words “Watch for cycles” or “Keep left” in Mandarin to the shared path stencils - and putting new stencils parallel to the museum/gardens entrances, so they are more obvious to pedestrians heading into or out of the entrances. Thanks!
