Animal - General
Reported Sunday, 12 October 2025 at 10:17 pm, 153 Oxford Tce, Canterbury, Christchurch 8011, New Zealand.
The reporter’s words
People were picking eels out of the Avon and throwing them at the steps today. I confronted them calmly but was confronted with verbal abuse and that nobody cares about eels. Sadly I think a do not touch the wildlife sign needs to be placed at the steps into the water at the Avon and that a fine for doing so needs to be displayed. Tourists thanked me for stopping this and I was embarrassed that this behaviour was witnessed in our beautiful city.
