Where a beer is banned, where the dog must be leashed or can’t go
at all, where a van can legally camp the night, the council keeps
its rules as polygons, and the map is the bylaw’s own. 532
drawn instruments sit on the roll across five kinds, every one
with its name, its control and the wording the register carries.

Statutory takiwā, the ground a rūnanga holds an
interest in, recorded in the rules layer itself.
The council’s rules as drawn areas, 532 instruments across five kinds: 313 dog rules, 152 bottle-store buffers, 29 freedom-camping zones, 18 alcohol bans and 20 rūnanga takiwā records. The map is the bylaw’s own drawing, straight from the register.
Is the map the law?
No, the bylaw is. These are the council’s own drawings of it, thinned for the web to about four metres; an edge case sits on whichever side the legal boundary does. The register’s wording wins where this page and the instrument differ.
Where can’t I take my dog?
313 named grounds carry a control, leashed, under effective control, or prohibited outright, with the summer beach bans counted apart. The page lists a spread and /suburb-rules.json tallies them by suburb.
Can I drink in a park or on the street?
Only where no ban covers the ground, 18 restriction areas are drawn, most of the central city around the clock and others on a clock (the register’s own times ride with each zone). Temporary event bans file under the same register.
Where can a van freedom-camp?
At Diamond Harbour Restricted Area, Robinson’s Bay Restricted Area, Little River Restricted Area, Purau Restricted Area, Takamatua Restricted Area, Akaroa Freedom Camping Area and 3 more, certified self-contained vehicles only, on the terms each zone names. The other 20 zones ban camping outright; the bylaw’s boundary is the answer and the page draws the register’s copy of it.
What is a rūnanga takiwā?
The statutory territory of a rūnanga, the ground a hapū or iwi authority holds an interest in under the settlement acts. The district sits inside several; the roll names each with the schedule description the legislation carries.
The record behind this
Christchurch City Council’s open data, the Regulatory service’s
own layers: alcohol restriction zones, dog restrictions, freedom-
camping management zones, local alcohol policy buffers and the
rūnanga territory schedule. A rule binds by the bylaw, not this
page; the register’s wording wins where they differ. The same
questions answered for a spot on the map are in
/before's ground answer.
