The wild ledger
The district plan’s ecological significance schedules,
130 mapped sites where the plan keeps its
account of what still lives: remnant bush, wetlands, estuary
edges, tussock and rock outcrops. Schedule A is protected ground;
Schedule B is the sighting still waiting on the landowner’s
handshake.

Solid green for the Schedule A sites the plan
protects; dashed green for Schedule B: sites recorded on private
land where protection is still being worked through with the

Questions, answered briefly What is this map? The district plan’s ecological significance schedules, 130 mapped sites covering 20,400 hectares: the remnants of what grew and lived here before the city, bush fragments, wetlands, estuary edges, tussock and rock outcrops the plan formally recognises.
What is the difference between Schedule A and B? Schedule A sites are protected, the plan’s rules apply to what happens on that ground. Schedule B (65 sites) is information only: ecological sites on private land the plan has recorded but not yet protected, pending collaboration with the landowners. Being on B is a sighting, not a shield.
Why does the same name appear in both schedules? Several places carry both listings, part of the ground protected under Schedule A while another part is still the Schedule-B conversation with its owners. The schedules mark status, not whole places.
Is unlisted land ecologically worthless? No. The schedule marks what the plan formally recognises, an unlisted stream bank or garden can still hold native lizards, birds and remnant planting. The schedule is the protected core, not the whole of the city’s ecology.
The record behind this
Christchurch City Council’s open data, the DistrictPlanB
service’s DPEcologicalSignificance layer, the operative plan’s
ecological significance schedules. Schedule A is the protected
list; Schedule B is recorded for information only, a sighting,
not a shield, while the council works with the landowners. The
schedule is a formal recognition, not a survey of every living
place. The cultural landscape sits at
/cultural , the waterways at
/water , and the parks at
/parks .
